Diamond District ‘In The Ruff’

DIAMOND DISTRICT
‘IN THE RUFF’
(MELLO MUSIC)
Oddisee says: “Our inspiration for the album was our love for a particular golden era sound – and the need for DC to contribute to that sound.”
We say: Possibly the most bizarre release of the oh-nine, this is the retail version of an album previously available as a free download. The blend of Oddisee’s production and XO and Yu’s vocals is still great, and there are a few additional tracks tacked on (like the heavy ‘Hologram’), but with shockingly low-budget packaging it’s hard to see who’s gonna actually pay for it…

low budget packaging? it’s a full color screen print on the disc, full color dope artwork in a digipak. I’m not positive but I think digipak’s are the most expensive type of cd cases they make – jewel cases are the cheapos. plus the vinyl has a colro label, double lp with full color!? i know that one of the most expensive things to do in music.
Honestly, I bought it cause it was mastered, dirty version, bonus tracks, new art, dope package (to me), and for $10 i can support my favorite group of the year so that i hope they make more music. i mean i drop $8 at burger king but you can’t see why i’d want to pay $10 for a cd that is one of the best of the year – to put it in my collection and support music.
your review is everything wrong with music today- you take and then bash what you said you liked.
Great point, Mike.
Not only that…since when did the packaging of an album become more important than the music contained within said packaging?
Sounds like dude would buy a Marky Mark comeback album if it was packaged right. lls
“Since when did the packaging of an album become more important than the music contained within said packaging?”
Er, when you’re talking about an album that’s given away as a free download for a number of months and then put out as a retail version. You’re asking people to pay for something that you previously gave them for free – the packaging should obviously reflect that.
@ADMINISTRATOR – YOU get the “Petty Murphy” award of the day…I would buy a great album literaly wrapped in shit as long as the MUSIC is dope…A show of hands, who buys an album just because it has a great cover? If that was the case Insane Clown Posse would be gold! I agree with others, if you gonna critizcize, complain about a song that was wack or lyrics were mediocre, spare us opinons of the album packaging…Who gives a shit? If there are already three of us that disagree, and you’re the only desenting opinion, that means it was perhaps a petty ass complaint, especially in the Digital Age, because even if you bought the retail version, don’t sit here and tell me you are still walking around with a Fucking Discman and you CD booklet!!! knowing you aren’t gonna care less about the packaing when you upload that sumbitch to your MP3..c’mon man!!
Especially when Drake did the same thing…What’s so bizzare about this release…This review is craptastic!!
